Workshops

Through my workshops I aim to focus on the creative and artistic aspects of image capture and to help photographers to clarify their own ‘vision’ and express it more potently. This process is essentially one of helping participants to ‘see’ a good photograph and then going on to use an understanding of psychological, creative and artistic principles to express that ‘vision’ effectively through the camera.

African Photographic Safaris for 2013

Saturday 14th to Saturday 21st July - 8 day photographic safari in Kenya

Another small-group all-inclusive safari, this time visiting two of Kenya’s best-known reserves. Firstly we go to Amboseli National Park with its backdrop of the snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro (Africa's highest mountain) and abundant wildlife. It is known for its large herds of elephants and plains game, including giraffes, gazelles, lions and leopards. The second half of the tour is spent in the Masai Mara Reserve, again known for its spectacular terrain and abundance of wildlife. In a typical year, the migration herds of wildebeest and zebra are reaching this region at this time and there is a good chance of catching one of the dramatic river crossings.

Unless requested, we have a limit of three people in addition to the English-speaking driver/guide per specially designed spacious 4-wheel drive vehicle. This ensures that you have plenty of room for your equipment and options to photograph through side-windows or the roof-hatch and to either side. All the accommodation along the way also has facilities for charging camera and laptop batteries – essential as you’ll be taking hundreds of pictures each day.

My aim is for you to have a great safari experience, see some amazing things and head home with some stunning photographs to support your happy memories. I plan to give a tutorial each day on various aspects of wildlife photography and to rotate the vehicles so that I am on hand to offer any advice or support. There is a limit of 8 participants so please ensure your place by booking quickly.

Saturday 7th to Saturday 14th September - ‘8 day Photographic Safari in Tanzania’

This safari visits three of the most famous reserves in the north of Tanzania and offers fantastic opportunities for photographing a wide range of East Africa’s beautiful and unique wildlife. First, we spend time in Tarangire National Park, famous for its large herds of elephants and magnificent baobab trees. Then we move on into the Serengeti National Park, where we’ll explore a range of terrains. We should catch up with the migrating herds of wildebeest and zebra in this region and hopefully see plenty of the predators too. Finally we’ll descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, one of the wonders of the natural world. There is a phenomenal abundance of wildlife on the floor of the crater and this will make for an unforgettable experience.

Unless requested, we have a limit of three people in addition to the English-speaking driver/guide per specially designed spacious 4-wheel drive vehicle. This ensures that you have plenty of room for your equipment and options to photograph through side-windows or the roof-hatch and to either side. The vehicles also have a charging facility for camera batteries. A short video taken during my safari in this region at the same time last year can be seen by clicking this link. No safari can guarantee sightings, but it gives you an idea of the type of things you are likely to witness.

Itinerary
Day 1 (7th Sept) - arrive JRO airport Arusha. Met and transferred to Karama Lodge. Pre-adventure briefing.
Day 2 - Drive to Tarangire for afternoon game drive and exploration. Accommodation is at the Nasikia Njiwa Camp in the centre of the reserve - in the original safari tradition, you will sleep under canvas to enjoy the sounds of the African night but will have all the comforts of a semi-permanent camp – enormous tents, large comfortable beds, your own bathroom with shower and toilet and excellent food in the dining tent. There is also a bar and in the evenings you can sit around a campfire chatting with fellow travellers.
Day 3 - Full day game driving and exploration in Tarangire.
Day 4 - Drive to the Serengeti for an afternoon game drive from the entrance gate at Naabi Hill. Our base here is the Nasikia Central Camp, another tented camp with great facilities and all the comforts.
Day 5 - Exploration to northern areas where the migrating herds should be.
Day 6 - Exploration to eastern areas – often left unexplored but an abundance of wildlife gathers on these plains.
Day 7 – Game drive and transfer to Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge – a wonderful lodge on the crater rim.
Day 8 - Descend early into the crater floor for game driving and then, in the afternoon, on to the airport for departure or extension of your trip.

Prices
US $2980 (c£1898)
There is a $380 supplement for single rooms.
Dinner is included on arrival at Karama Lodge and all meals are included throughout the safari as are all park entrance fees. Drinks, tips, purchases and your visa fee to enter Tanzania are not included. Visas can be obtained on arrival and the charge was US$50 to 100 when last checked – depending where you are coming from.

Further safaris in Africa are being planned beyond these. Please contact me to register your interest as this can be helpful through taking into consideration your requirements.

Improve Your Landscape Photography Workshops/Holidays in Greece

Dates to be announced for 2014

This one-week small group workshop will take place in the Southern Peloponnese of Greece which offers some stunning coastal and mountain scenery – ideal for improving your landscape photography skills. It will be conducted in English and will be open to visitors who will be accommodated in the charming small seaside town of Kardamili, and to local people who can commit themselves to the 6-day schedule.

Daily ‘photo-shoot’ excursions will be made to local sites of beauty, making use of early morning or evening light, so participants will need to have a digital camera at the very least and ideally a tripod. Some time will also be set aside each day for analysis of the results and discussion of theory and techniques. The excursions and discussion time will amount to about 4-5 hours per day, so there will also be a good portion of ‘free-time’ each day for relaxation, enabling participants to spend time with their travelling companions.

These workshops run in the late Spring and early Autumn when conditions tend to be ideal for landscape work. My fee for the workshop is £300. This doesn’t include your flight (direct flights to Kalamata airport), accommodation (I will suggest hotels for this and provide you with contact information to make bookings) or food and refreshments. You will also be expected to arrange your own travel insurance. Please contact me to register your interest and book a space. A deposit of £200 is required at the time of booking with the balance being due one month before the workshop commences. Payment will be refunded in full should the workshop be cancelled for any reason.

See the News & Discussion page for a review and photos from one of the 2010 workshops.

Direct flights to nearby Kalamata run from the UK on Saturdays and Sundays. Help can be provided with transfers from the airport to your accommodation if it is not included in your package and if you are not hiring a car. Package deals are available through companies such as Simply Travel. Flights also come directly to Kalamata from Norway (Lilleput Travel) and Holland (Ross Holidays) and possibly Germany.

In the UK

One-to-one landscape photography workshops by appointment at chosen locations on Dartmoor. £120 per half-day or £150 for a full day (the fee is reduced if there are extra participants). The fee only covers tuition, guidance and a tutorial as appropriate. We meet at the site and explore it on foot. If we move on to other sites you will need your own transportation. Please also bring your own refreshments and snacks. A deposit of £20 is required at the time of booking with the rest being payable on the day.

Please contact me to arrange a workshop.

Payments

One option for making the payment is through the PayPal system on this site by going to the Workshop Payment Gallery and clicking on the image that appears.
